What matters for a teacher is relationship with students: Elson D’Souza

“My parents are into agriculture. Their guidance brought me to this extent. Otherwise, it would have been impossible to reach this hight in life,” said teacher, writer and resource person Elson D'Souza during Thaallo Umaallo live phone in programme on October 25.

Answering a question about his experience of working in a women’s college, Mr D’Souza said for a teacher, it does not matter which college he teaches – whether boys’ college or girls’. What matters is the relationship between students and teachers.

Mr D’Souza started his journey as an emcee at the age of 17. He remembered his bitter experiences and sweet memories of those days. It was a tough time for a person like him coming from a small village, he said. But still that experience led him to this level today.

“Hirgan is a small place, where I studied till SSLC in Kannada medium. I like to work in fields. My mom made us compulsory to do the work of flowers. It helped us to gain our education fees,” Mr D’Souza added.

He has been a resource person for many programmes. The youth movements like YCS/ICYM have had a wider impact on his career, he said.

“We must love teaching profession, not salary. If someone goes only behind salary, the love towards profession declines. Salary should be secondary,” Mr D’Souza opined. “When you get up in the morning if there is interest that I must take classes today, he/she is a good teacher,” he said.

He writes a regular Konkani column called ‘Paizana’ where he pens short poems with a message. His many poems were written while travelling by bus. His Kannada poem ‘Ithi Nimma Bidinaayi’ during the pandemic of 2020 became very popular. He is popularly known as poet of break-up poems. He also serves as a quick news reader for Carmel Kiran. He gave his service for Muktha TV over one and half year. Presently Mr D’Souza is pursuing his Ph.D from Srinivas University. At present he works as an assistant professor in the department of BBA at St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangalore.

During the live phone in, he recited many Kannada and Konkani Poems. Many callers wished and interacted with Mr D'Souza.

Vinod Gangolli from Divyavaani and Manoj Fernandes from the department of BBA were present during the programme. The show will be telecast in Divyavaani Live YouTube channel on October 31 at 8 p.m.
